Start by looking for popular brands. Companies like Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Rheem, Coleman and Tempstar are all popular brands that have earned their reputation by being reliable. They often use the same furnace parts, making repair and maintenance easier and more affordable. Also ask your HVAC representative what models they prefer. Because they work on them every day, they usually have a preference and can give you information that will aid in your decision.
Know what you need before you look. If you live in an older home, you may have special needs to consider before you choose a furnace. In some cases, older ductwork may not work with certain types of furnaces, giving you added expense of parts and labor to install new ductwork throughout the house.
